Because these metric bolts are notorious for seizing or spinning the internal frame inserts (nutserts), here is what you need to know for a successful replacement or repair:
Essential Hardware Specs
  • Thread Pitch: M12 x 1.75
  • Length: 40mm (Under-head length)
  • Strength Grade: Grade 10.9 (Metric equivalent to Imperial Grade 8)
  • Quantity Needed: 6 bolts total (3 per frame rail)
Common Complications & Fixes
  • The Nutsert Spin: The factory inserts inside the frame rails often break free. If your bolt spins infinitely, you will need to cut the bolt off, drill out the old insert, and install a new M12-1.75 heavy-duty nutsert.
  • Thread Cleaning: If the internal threads are just rusty but intact, run an M12 x 1.75 thread chaser (not a cutting tap) up into the frame to clean out the debris before installing new bolts.
  • Anti-Seize is Mandatory: Apply a liberal coat of nickel or copper anti-seize to the threads. This prevents the steel bolt from chemically bonding to the frame insert over time.
