This can result from a leak, the use of the wrong engine oil, or an old oil filter that is too clogged to let oil pass through the system correctly. Oil issues can severely damage your engine, which is why most owner's manuals recommend getting a synthetic oil change every 7,500 miles or so. If this light comes on, you should visit a service department sooner to avoid shortening the life span of one of your vehicle's most essential components through overheating or poor lubrication.
